Short version: your videos, audio and captions never leave your Mac.
The app
- Stillreel imports, transcribes, previews and exports video entirely on your Mac. Speech recognition uses whisper.cpp with a Whisper model that ships inside the app. Nothing is uploaded.
- The only network request the app makes is a licence check with Gumroad (our store) when you enter a key, and about once a month afterwards. It sends the licence key and product id only.
- There is no analytics, tracking, advertising or crash reporting in the app, and no account.
What the app saves, and where
- Projects (
.cmprojpackages) wherever you save them. A project stores your edit, captions and settings, plus a reference to each media file (a macOS bookmark and its path relative to the project). It does not copy your video into the project. - Exports (MP4, SRT, VTT, OTIO) wherever you choose.
- Audio working copies: to keep sound exactly in sync after cuts, Stillreel decodes each video's audio once to a WAV file in your user Caches folder. You can delete these at any time; they are recreated when needed.
- Temporary files: audio for transcription is held in memory only and never written to disk. Stillreel keeps working copies of each clip's audio in its Caches folder so cuts are exact; copies unused for 30 days are removed automatically, and the cache is kept under 2 GB.
- Your licence key and trial start date are kept in your Mac's Keychain.

This website
This site uses privacy-friendly, cookie-free page-view counting (Vercel Web Analytics). No advertising trackers.
To learn which pages lead to downloads, the site also records page views and clicks on the buy and trial buttons with our own counter. It stores a random identifier in your browser's local storage (no cookie), adds it to the Gumroad link you click so a trial or purchase can be matched to the page it came from, and records the page, the referring site's name and any campaign tags in the address. It does not record your IP address, and nothing is shared with advertisers. Clear your browser's site data to reset the identifier.
