Free video editors for Mac with no watermark: what you actually get
Plenty of editors call themselves free, then stamp their logo on your export or keep the useful features for paying users. Here's what the no-watermark options on a Mac really include.
Genuinely free, no watermark
iMovie
Free from Apple, no watermark, easy to learn. It has no automatic captions, no subtitle import, and it is built around widescreen projects, so vertical video for Reels and TikTok is awkward.
DaVinci Resolve (free version)
A professional editor that is free to download. Exports from the free version don't carry a watermark as long as you avoid the features reserved for the paid Studio version, which also include automatic subtitles. It is powerful, but the learning curve is steep for a 30-second clip.
Free tiers that add a watermark
Most web-based editors have a free plan that adds a watermark, limits resolution or caps length. Checked on 20 October 2026 on their pricing pages:
| Tool | Free plan | Paid from |
|---|---|---|
| Descript | Watermark, 720p, 1 media hour | $16/month (annual) |
| Kapwing | Watermark, 720p, 10-minute limit | $16/month |
| VEED | Watermark, 720p, 10-minute limit | about $9–19/month (sources differ) |
| CapCut | Free tier; auto captions reported to need Pro | $19.99/month for Pro |
All of these also upload your video to process it.
Where Stillreel fits
Stillreel isn't free: it costs $24 once. But it has no watermark at any point, including the 14-day trial, so you can use it for real posts before deciding.
- Automatic captions made on your Mac, in five styles, editable word by word.
- 9:16, 1:1 and 16:9 export with crop and pan or a blurred background.
- 1080×1920 H.264 MP4 exports, plus SRT and VTT subtitle files.
- No account; works offline.
What it doesn't have: templates, effects, transitions, music, multi-track editing. If you need those for free, iMovie or DaVinci Resolve are the honest answer.
How to choose
| You want | Try |
|---|---|
| Free, simple edits, landscape video | iMovie |
| Free, full control, time to learn | DaVinci Resolve |
| Captions and vertical video quickly, no watermark, no subscription | Stillreel trial, then $24 once |
Watch out for
- "Watermark remover" tools and modified downloads of paid apps. They often carry malware and break the app's terms.
- Free plans that only remove the watermark at a lower resolution.
- Trials that watermark exports, so you can't judge the real result.
- Free tiers that need an account and upload your footage, if privacy matters for the clip.
Common questions
Does the Stillreel trial watermark exports? No. Trial exports are identical to licensed ones. When the 14 days are up, exporting needs a licence; your projects still open.
Can I export in full HD? Yes: 1080×1920 for vertical, 1080×1080 square and 1920×1080 landscape, as H.264 MP4.
Do I need an account? No. You download the app, and if you buy, you paste the licence key from your receipt.
Will it slow down an older Mac? Stillreel needs Apple silicon. On our M-series Mac mini a 10-minute 1080p export took under a minute and a half.
