A CapCut alternative for Mac: pay once, nothing uploaded

CapCut is popular for good reasons. If what you mostly use it for is captions, vertical framing and a quick export, here is a plain comparison with a smaller, local Mac app.

Why people look for an alternative

  • Price. CapCut Pro is listed at $19.99 a month or $179.99 a year (reported in October 2026). App Store reviewers in October 2026 report that auto captions moved from the Standard plan to Pro, and CapCut's own help pages say Auto Reframe needs Pro.
  • Uploading. A third-party review reports that CapCut's AI features, including captions, process video on CapCut's servers.
  • Terms. Some creators raised concerns about CapCut's 2025 terms of service; CapCut says the user-content section didn't change. A local app avoids the question: your files never go to a server.

What Stillreel does

  • Import MP4, MOV and M4V (H.264 or HEVC; 24, 25, 29.97 and 30 fps tested, plus variable-frame-rate phone footage).
  • Trim, split, delete and reorder clips on one timeline, with undo.
  • Auto captions with whisper.cpp on your Mac, editable word by word, in five styles.
  • 9:16, 1:1 or 16:9 output with crop and pan, a blurred background or plain fit.
  • Export a 1080×1920 H.264 MP4 with no watermark, plus SRT/VTT caption files.

In our tests, edited exports had no dropped or duplicated frames at any cut, and audio stayed within 0.1 ms of the picture across 100 random cuts.

What you would give up

Stillreel is deliberately small. It has no templates, effects, stickers, transitions, stock music, multi-track editing, green screen, AI avatars or direct posting to social apps, and no iPhone version yet. If those are what you use CapCut for, stay with CapCut. If you mostly caption talking clips and turn them vertical, Stillreel does that for less than two months of CapCut Pro, once.

Stillreel isn't affiliated with CapCut and can't open CapCut projects; start from your original video files.

Common questions

Is Stillreel a CapCut clone? No. It is an original app with its own design and caption styles, and it uses no CapCut assets. It covers one job CapCut is often used for: captioned vertical clips.

Is there a free version? There's a 14-day trial with every feature and no watermark. After that it's $24 once; there's no free tier.

Does it run on Windows or iPhone? Not yet. Stillreel is a Mac app for Apple silicon.
