Try it first
The free trial is the full app for 14 days, counted from the first time you open it. Exports have no watermark during the trial either, so you can judge the real result. After 14 days you can still open your projects; exporting needs a licence. Enter your key with Stillreel ▸ Enter Licence Key… and carry on where you left off.

Does Stillreel upload my videos?
No. Speech recognition runs on your Mac with whisper.cpp, and preview and export use Apple's AVFoundation. Stillreel works offline. The only network request it makes is to check your licence key with Gumroad, our store; it sends the key and the product id, nothing else.
Is there a watermark?
No. Not on exports, and not during the free trial either.
Is it a subscription?
No. You pay $24 (launch price until 2026-11-30, then $29) once and keep it. A licence works on up to 3 of your Macs.
How does the free trial work?
Download it and use every feature for 14 days, counted from the first time you open the app. After that you can still open your projects; exporting needs a licence.
Which languages can it caption?
The language menu offers English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Japanese, plus Detect language. We have measured English and German with real voices and checked French with a synthetic voice. The others use the same Whisper model but we haven't measured them yet, so try a short clip first.
How accurate are the captions?
On real English read speech about 96% of words were right, and the typical word started 55 ms from when it was spoken (90% within about 0.2 s). German had more errors (10–16% of words). A few captions in a clip can be a couple of tenths of a second off; you can nudge or retime any caption before exporting. Check a short clip first, especially with strong accents or noisy audio.
Which Macs does it run on?
Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or later) running macOS 14 Sonoma or later. We have tested it on macOS 26, so try the free trial first on older versions. Intel Macs are not supported.
Which video files work?
MP4, MOV and M4V with H.264 or HEVC video. We have tested 24, 25, 29.97 and 30 fps footage and variable-frame-rate phone video. Exports are H.264 MP4 at 1080×1920, 1080×1080 or 1920×1080.
Can I use it with Final Cut Pro or another editor?
Yes. Export your captions as SRT or VTT files, or the timeline as an OpenTimelineIO (.otio) file.
What doesn't it do?
It has one video track plus a caption track. There are no templates, effects, transitions, stock music, green screen or direct posting to social apps.
What about refunds?
If it isn't right for you, reply to your receipt email within 14 days for a full refund.
